My interviewee is a Chatham alumni who is currently employed at Merrill Lynch. They were only here for their graduate degree so they were not apart of the available clubs on campus. What I learned about good studying strategies is that it is important to make time to study. A lot of students have busy schedules and put studying to the side but it is always important to find the time to study for tests/quizzes. A piece of advice I learned about building a good portfolio is how important it is to get internships. Internships are valuable because they teach you different parts of a business and they look good when the time comes to apply for my first job. I also learned how important the business mixers are. They are a great way to meet different businesses and get your "in" to that company. Following up is just as important after meeting someone because it gives them a chance to remember you. Planning for good internships is important because you have to apply early. It is important to remember the early deadlines and get your application in.
The article I chose to compare and contrast was the MAcc Student Spotlight: Rachel Kolar. I can relate to her because she played a sport here at Chatham and also got through it to pursue her fifth year to get a masters in accounting. Comparing this to what I learned was the article talks about the internships she had. It shows how important internships are and not just one internship but having multiple is important. She evens leaves a very relevant quote about GPA not being as important as being at work or having an internship. A difference was how she took her path. It seems as if this is something she always wanted to do. It is nice her plan worked out but for others it could be difficult to find their true calling.
Relating this to class would be when we learned about C-Corp, S-Corp, Partnerships, and Individuals. In the article it talks about how she got to prepare tax returns for each types of company. It is good to know the different types of companies because their are major differences especially when it comes to taxes, between all of those different types of companies. Learning this in class also made it easier to understand the differences when I see them in articles like this.
